Remote Pathway Pilot

For the first time, the Feminisms and Rhetorics Conference will pilot a remote conference pathway in addition to the in-person conference. Remote attendees may join live virtual sessions and livestreamed major in-person events, such as the keynote speech, workshops, and the Town Hall meeting.

How to participate

Apply to present remotely.

As part of the remote pathway pilot, the conference will offer the following modalities:

  1. An in-person, on-site concurrent session.
  2. An in-person, on-site concurrent session where at least one presenter is in-person, on-site, and the remaining presenters are virtual.
  3. A virtual-only presentation on Zoom (which can include an individual presentation, a panel, a performance, a roundtable discussion, or a workshop) where both the presenter(s) and audience are using the University’s Zoom conference services platform.

Register as “virtual only.”

When registration opens, there will be a tiered registration cost; select “virtual only” as your registration type. If you are presenting and/or attending remotely, you can then access concurrent sessions on the “virtual pathway” (schedule to be released later), along with the town hall and keynote.

Access virtual sessions and major events on Oxford Abstracts.

You will access the virtual pathway sessions, the town hall, and the keynote through the conference program on Oxford Abstracts. The program will show which events are accessible virtually and provide the access link and presentation materials. You’ll receive the link to Oxford Abstracts when you register for the conference.

How this differs from the in-person conference

Lower registration fee

The price of registering as a virtual presenter and/or attendee is $150. This lower price reflects the more limited panel sessions available to virtual participants.

Livestreaming and rewatching options

Virtual participants will be able to stream the virtual pathway sessions live; depending on presenter preference, there may be access to temporary recordings to rewatch or catch up on missed sessions. If a virtual presenter would prefer not to have their session recorded and posted, they may indicate this when registering.

Eligibility

Anyone can register for the remote pathway pilot. In-person participants may also join virtual pathway sessions at no additional cost.

FAQs

Why can’t remote attendees access all in-person sessions?

The local planning committee is piloting the virtual experience. Our hope is to offer the Coalition recommendations and lessons learned from this pilot so that they can expand remote access for future FemRhet conferences. This pilot pathway is a first step toward understanding the interest in offering a more robust remote experience for future FemRhet conferences. Because remote attendees will have access to fewer concurrent sessions, the registration cost is lower.

How will Q&A work?

For each virtual panel, the session moderator will facilitate the Q&A portion via Zoom’s Q&A feature. Attendees may unmute to ask a question or submit a question to the moderator to read aloud.

For in-person events, such as the town hall and keynote, remote attendees may participate in the Q&A by speaking aloud or sending their comment or question to a dedicated in-person attendee who will be monitoring the Zoom chat.

What if I can’t join a virtual session live?

If you can’t join a virtual session live, you may be able to access a recording of the event. Pending the approval of individual presenters, we will record and post sessions for access for a limited amount of time. That way, you can watch sessions when it works for you.

Do I need a Zoom account to join remotely?

No. You do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting as a participant. You may join from your browser or the downloaded Zoom app.
